A Wine That
is a first for Michael and his partner Sonja. Analogue No1 stands for experiments that don't require a specific idea of wine. Rather, these are wines that allow for contemplation and new frontiers. Where and How?
This wine is made from 100% Furmint grown on blue quartz soils. The grapes were hand harvested and whole bunch pressed before being transferred to one amphora where the wine aged for 3 months on its fine lees. The wine was then bottled with a slight effervescence and without the addition of sulphur.
The Winemaker: Michael Wenzel
If Michael lived 150 years ago, he may well have been one of Europe’s most famous winemakers. Back then, Furmint was one of the king of grapes and the wines made from the variety were a go-to choice, just like fine Burgundy or Bordeaux.
However, back in the 1990s, when Michael took over from his father, customers who entered their cellars were preferring to go for Sauvignon or dry Muskateller, as that is what everyone else was selling. Despite the lack of commercial interest, Michael continued to grow and bottle Furmint and time proved him right. With the renaissance of indigenous grapes in Burgenland and curious professionals all around the world, Michael’s path proved the right one, and he is now one of Austria’s most respected farmers and winemakers.
