A Wine That

represents a special starting point for this young star of the Beaujolais — Jules Métras, son of renowned natural wine star Yvon Métras. It demonstrates why the Gamay grape variety is capable of great things — this is mineral and dense, yet still light on its feet and full of energy — think a modern take on classical music. Raspberries and cherries with an added white pepper spritz and a sappy green edge, this is springtime, bottled.

Where and How?

This is Gamay from Jules' Bijou vineyard planted in Vauxrenard, north east of Chiroubles, 450 metres above sea level. It is the first vineyard that Jules took over from his father and he has been making this cuvée since 2014. Here, the soil is richer than in Chiroubles. The soil is gently worked by a horse that Jules bought a few years ago. The wine comes from 40 year old vines planted in Gobelet style. The wine was vinified using semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks for 20 days, and the wine was aged in concrete until the following vintage. No added sulfites.

The Winemaker

Jules Métras is following in his father's footsteps, who started making wine in Beaujolais in 1988. Before starting to make wine in Beaujolais himself, Jules explored different areas and worked with the best in the Ardèche and the Jura. His soif for knowledge also led him to work in the southern hemisphere (New Zealand, Chile & Argentina) and in 2010, Jules came back to his native Beaujolais to help his father Yvon tend the vines. Today, Jules farms three hectares that he bottles under his own name with his first vintage released in 2014.
