We said it before, we will say it again if you are looking for freshness, vibrancy, focus, perfect fruit acidity balance and a lot of fun look no further than a bottle of 'Leithaberg' Blaufränkisch. Since the 2014 vintage Markus blends a good part of his two prime terroir plots 'Jungenberg' and 'Gritschenberg' when making this cuvée. Limestone stands for spice, grip and fruit - Schist for length, tension and precision.

Where and How?
The grapes for this 'Leithaberg' Blaufränkisch come from Markus' two most important vineyards. 'Gritschenberg' is filled with precious old-vines, translating the dense fossile limestone terroir on the one hand, on the other hand 'Jungenberg' characterized by the rare schist terroir on the Leithaberg appellation give Blaufränkisch a vertical structure with a great deal of drinkability. Each year, the grapes are hand harvested and macerated in large open vats for a couple of weeks before being pressed slowly and transferred into various sizes of used wooden barrels between 500 and 1000L. The wine continues fermentation and ages on the full lees for at least 12 to 18 months before being bottled with a small addition of sulphur.
The Winemaker: Markus Altenburger
Every now and then you meet a winemaker who approaches wine from a completely different angle. These are the people who make you subconsciously cock your head to one side while getting lost in thought.
One of these people is Markus Altenburger. From the way he describes how a vine interacts with its environment in an easy, matter of fact manner, to his pragmatic thinking behind skin-contact white wine, Markus has a logical explanation for everything. It’s a logic you also find in the wine, but that’s not to say they’re simple ‘tick box’ wines.
Rather, these are rubix cube wines: you need to take some time to get to know them.
