Chardonnay vom Kalk 2018
£18.00
A Wine That
is a true ambassador of the local 'Leithakalk' soils. Markus' grandfather already planted Chardonnay (back then locally known as Weißer Burgunder) in the 1960s knowing that the limestone rich soils make the perfect foundation for this grape. Chardonnay 'without make-up' and endlessly delicious!.

Where and How?
This wine comes from organically grown vineyards in and around Markus home village Jois. The 'Leithakalk' terroir, the regions signature soils, gives this wine the main character. Grapes are harvested by hand and pressed slowly after a few hours of macerating on the skins. The fermenting juice then goes in used barrels, concrete eggs and tank for a minimum of 6 months without racking and any additions. In Spring the wines are bottled without filtration with a small addition of sulphur.
The Winemaker: Markus Altenburger
One of these people is Markus Altenburger. From the way he describes how a vine interacts with its environment in an easy, matter of fact manner, to his pragmatic thinking behind skin-contact white wine, Markus has a logical explanation for everything. It’s a logic you also find in the wine, but that’s not to say they’re simple ‘tick box’ wines.
Rather, these are rubix cube wines: you need to take some time to get to know them.
