Kapitel I 2017
A Wine That
is close to Christian's heart. When he first started making wine he was often excited about Cabernet Franc from the Loire (compared to many of his friends who back then were drinking heavy reds from Bordeaux or the New World) and so it was just a logical step for him to start his 'chapter one' with Cabernet Franc vines that came from a vineyard called 'Kapitel' around his home village of Illmitz. Fast forward the 2016 is an impressive interpretation from a cooler vintage 'Franc' packed with spices and herbs that often reminds us of the great benchmark growers in Saumur Champigny or Bourgeuil.

Where and How?
The grapes for 'Kapitel I' come from a small plot in the village of Illmitz, Christian's home town. For all his reds, Christian uses a special vertical press that replicates a pressure no more than a handshake. In a way most of Christian's wines are a combination of largely free run juice giving it a beatiful lift and texture. All his wines age in large barrels ranging between 1000L and 2500L in size. Bottling takes place around 12 months after harvest without filtration or fining.
The Winemaker: Christian Tschida
Christian Tschida is one of a kind. He might be renowned as one of the world's most cult natural winemakers, but when it comes down to it, he'd prefer not to talk about wine at all — rather art. For that's how to describe Christian's wines — these are playful-yet-serious interpretations of what Mother Nature gives him. His grapes are like watercolour, acrylic and graffiti interchanged from year to year.
