Gelber Segelfalter — Gelber Muskateller - 2019

Calcareous Marl

Gelber Muskateller

Where and How?

Gelber Segelfalter is named after the very rare yellow swallowtail butterfly (also known as the sail swallowtail butterfly) which can be found fluttering around Andreas' vineyards full of plants, herbs, wildlife and bugs. For this cuvée, Andreas selects Gelber Muskateller (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) grown on relatively poor calcerous marl. The poor soil results in a low yield which contributes to a more complex, distinctive wine.

After hand harvesting, the bunches were destemmed and then gently pressed. Fermentation took place in wooden barrels with indigenous yeast, which also lends this wine a one-of-a-kind quality. Minimal use of sulfites contributes further to its uniqueness.

Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The Winemaker: Andreas Tscheppe

Andreas Tscheppe embodies what it means to have a gentle touch — both in the vineyards and in the winery. This is perfectly encapsulated via his labels, which feature the beautiful fauna that inhabit his vineyards. For Andreas, it's all about them: his vineyards are not just monocultures, they're home to a whole biodiverse world of animals, fungi and plants. Through biodynamic farming and natural winemaking, and patience via long ageing periods, you truly get a sense of this unique natural Styrian world in the bottle.
