Clouds Riesling 2020

£23.00 £27.00

A Wine That

is named after the fact that the vineyard spends a lot of its time in the clouds. It’s a wine for slow weekends spent lazing with a good book or podcast — a wine to drink in a bubble bath, while de-stressing from a busy week. It's a fresh breeze kind of wine, all about crisp acidity and lemon rind — a spa treatment for your palate.

Clouds Riesling - 2020

Adelaide Hills

Where and How?

This is organically farmed Riesling from the Adelaide Hills, from the Scary Gully and Forest Range vineyards at a high 620m elevation. Its makers say,

"A vineyard that spends a lot of its time in the clouds! It can be extremely difficult to get the fruit perfectly ripe before the rain or birds get the better of it, but this was the year for it. Enjoy the texture, and that hallmark lemon sherbet."
Direct whole cluster pressed, fermented naturally and aged for eight months in old oak French barrels. Bottled unfined and lightly filtered (for stability) with just a tiny touch of sulfites. The 2020 edition was bottled with 7g/L of sugar, giving it a lovely balance with the acidity. Only four barrels made.

The Winemaker: Gentle Folk

From a PhD in green seaweed diversity, to researching and diving for seaweed in the northwest Pacific, somewhere along the way, Gareth and Rainbo Belton fell head-over-heels for the wines of the Adelaide Hills in Australia.

A tasting with some of the region’s well-known natural wine pioneers saw Gareth hooked, and before he knew it, he was up at 5am in a truck with James Erskine to go and harvest throughout the hills. He never looked back. Gentle Folk was born.

They are known for their smashable, moreish Rainbow Juice and Vin de Sofa, which took the natural wine world by storm. More recently, they’ve turned their sights to fine tuning their single vineyard Pinots and Chardonnays.

One dream still remains. To make the equivalent of lunchtime Chianti. It’s a dream that’s not too far off… and one that will collide with Vin de Sofa.
