Vin de Sofa 2020
A Wine That
in the makers’ words - is a “no-bullshit wine.” A blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, this is a super-light red wine that has a floral twist, kind of like those fancy deserts that have flower petals in them. It’s a wine that heightens energy and brings laughter: a wine for reunions amongst friends, by the bucketload.

Where and How?
This is a blend from various Adelaide Hills vineyards, organically farmed – Little Creek (Norton Summit), Scary Gully (Forest Range), Turnbull (Charleston) & Morialta (Norton Summit). The different varieties were fermented separately in 2020 due to a difference in ripening between sites. The Pinot Noir was fermented as 100% whole bunch, pressed after seven days and aged in neutral French barrels. The Pinot Gris was direct-pressed and fermented and aged in stainless steel. The Merlot was all destemmed and spent 10 days on skins before being pressed and aged in stainless tanks. The wine was blended and bottled in August 2020.
The Winemaker: Gentle Folk
From a PhD in green seaweed diversity, to researching and diving for seaweed in the northwest Pacific, somewhere along the way, Gareth and Rainbo Belton fell head-over-heels for the wines of the Adelaide Hills in Australia.
A tasting with some of the region’s well-known natural wine pioneers saw Gareth hooked, and before he knew it, he was up at 5am in a truck with James Erskine to go and harvest throughout the hills. He never looked back. Gentle Folk was born.
They are known for their smashable, moreish Rainbow Juice and Vin de Sofa, which took the natural wine world by storm. More recently, they’ve turned their sights to fine tuning their single vineyard Pinots and Chardonnays.
One dream still remains. To make the equivalent of lunchtime Chianti. It’s a dream that’s not too far off… and one that will collide with Vin de Sofa.
