L'Abrunet — Blanc 2020
A Wine That
made us beam from ear to ear when we found it. It's not easy finding mid-week treats that deliver on organic farming, complexity and price point, but this wine (and its rosé and red siblings) ticks all of the boxes. Think freshly squeezed lemonade with a dash of peach juice and a sprinkle of sea salt. Yumminess squared.

Where and How?
This comes from organically farmed Garnacha Blanca (the same as Grenache Blanc, but the Spanish name) planted in the Finca Quart vineyard of the Corbera d'Ebre area of the Terra Alta D.O, in southern Catalonia.
The grapes are harvested at different maturity levels — so two different harvests. The first harvest was carried out with a potential alcohol of around 11.5%, to harness acidity. Then, the second pick was done with a potential alcohol of around 14%, to achieve the full flavour spectrum of the variety. The two were then blended for ageing. They say,
"So what we get with this wine is the ultimate expression of the variety, Yin and Yang of Garnacha Blanca."
The Winemaker: Celler Frisach
Celler Frisach represents a rebirth — not only of a centuries-old estate — but also of the appellation of Terra Alta in Catalonia. Struck by war less than a century ago, the area is undergoing a revival, and brothers Francesc and Joan Ferré are at the helm. The name Frisach is a testament to their great-grandfather; historically their family hads always been grape growers. Like so many others, they began to sell their fruit and stop winemaking in the 20th century. However, this young duo was inspired by the natural wine movement, and having been to oenology school, decided to give winemaking a go themselves. Despite having been trained classically, these wines are all about hands-off winemaking and a lightness of touch, and every year they carry out new experiments to allow their organic fruit to shine in the bottle.
