Where and How?
The Chardonnay for this wine comes from a single vineyard located on soils rich in marl and limestone - absolutely classic for Burgundy. The vineyard sits at a relatively high altitude, which encourages phenolic ripeness in the skins of the grapes. This means that the tannins in the wine are gentle and round. After vinification in steel tanks, the wine is was then aged in old barrels for one year. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The Winemaker: Domaine de Thalie
The rolling hills of Burgundy’s Mâconnais region are particularly celebrated for vibrant Chardonnay, but there are also excellent Pinot Noir and Gamay vineyards here; some of which are home to treasured old vines.
One of the winemakers who found himself enamoured by this microclimate is Peter Gierszewski, of Domaine de Thalie. Previously a chemistry student turned wine merchant, when the opportunity arose to delve in headfirst to the world of farming and winemaking, there was no turning back.
