Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2018 — Chardonnay
A Wine That
raises this appellation to a next level; this is the Pikachu of naturally made Hautes-Côtes de Beaunes. Guided with TLC and in the spirit of low intervention, the famous limestone terroir does its thing, giving the wine that hallmark saline crunch. A (future) classic in the making!

Where and How?
This is biodynamically farmed Chardonnay, grown on two little parcels, "La Comme" (planted '93) and "Les Côtes" (planted '61). Both are rooted in clay limestone.
The grapes were pressed whole bunch, after which the juice was fermented naturally and aged for ten months in old barrels. Bottled unfined with a very gentle filtration.
Only 2,983 bottles were made.
Isabelle and Jean-Yves Vantey are two people whose paths just happened to cross at the right time. Picture the scene: It’s 1993 in the hills of Valais, Switzerland. Jean-Yves, a recent graduate of Vichy, is spending his summer working as a DJ and Isabelle, a Swiss native, is an au pair. It’s snowing outside, the fire is crackling and the raclette is warm…. OK, we digress.
Neither were born into winemaking families, but a shared passion for the good stuff eventually led them to a new life in Burgundy. It was then, in 1998, that Isabelle and Jean-Yves moved into their new home in the Maranges and just one year later acquired a modest 1ha of vines which they crowned Domaine des Rouges Queues. Before they knew it (and truly, they couldn’t quite believe it themselves) they were winemakers.
Then, step by step, they decided to do things a little differently; a little more naturally.
