Hautes-Côtes de Beaune 2018 — Pinot Noir

£39.00

A Wine That

shows that making natural wine and fine wine is not a question of 'either or.'  Indeed, the world’s best natural wines are truly delicious fine wines - wines that enchant you and give the WOW factor. Isabelle and Jean-Yves' Hautes-Côtes rouge is a great example of this; a fresh, juicy, naturally made Burgundy with a spicy white pepper backbone. Gluggable, but seriously so.

Pinot Noir

Where and How?

This is Pinot Noir from a parcel of just under one hectare, farmed biodynamically, planted on clay limestone soils in 1963.

The grapes were foot stomped, after which they macerated whole cluster for fifteen days with some gentle pumpovers of the juice to ensure a healthy natural fermentation with minimal extraction. The wine was then aged for ten months in old oak barrels, after which it was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The Winemaker

Isabelle and Jean-Yves Vantey are two people whose paths just happened to cross at the right time. Picture the scene: It’s 1993 in the hills of Valais, Switzerland. Jean-Yves, a recent graduate of Vichy, is spending his summer working as a DJ and Isabelle, a Swiss native, is an au pair. It’s snowing outside, the fire is crackling and the raclette is warm…. OK, we digress.

Neither were born into winemaking families, but a shared passion for the good stuff eventually led them to a new life in Burgundy. It was then, in 1998, that Isabelle and Jean-Yves moved into their new home in the Maranges and just one year later acquired a modest 1ha of vines which they crowned Domaine des Rouges Queues. Before they knew it (and truly, they couldn’t quite believe it themselves) they were winemakers.

Then, step by step, they decided to do things a little differently; a little more naturally.
